Michael Costigan made the transition to producing movies after a successful career as a motion picture studio executive.
Previously for Focus Features, he executive-produced Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain. The movie won 3 Academy Awards, and 4 Golden Globe Awards including Best Picture. His other producing credits include Noam Murro's Smart People, starring Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Ellen Page.
Mr. Costigan founded his own production company, Corduroy Films, in 2002. In 2005, he joined Ridley and Tony Scott's production company Scott Free, based at 20th Century Fox, as president.
For Scott Free, he has produced Mark and Jay Duplass' Cyrus, starring John C. Reilly, Jonah Hill, and Marisa Tomei; and Jake Scott's Welcome to the Rileys, starring James Gandolfini, Kristen Stewart, and Melissa Leo. Also for Scott Free, Mr. Costigan most recently produced Zal Batmanglij's The East, written by the director and Brit Marling, who stars in the movie with Alexander Skarsgård and Ellen Page; and Park Chan-wook's Stoker, starring Nicole Kidman and Mia Wasikowska.
Also for Scott Free, he has co-produced Jordan Scott's Cracks, starring Juno Temple and María Valverde; executive-produced Tony Scott's The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3; and executive-produced Ridley Scott's American Gangster, for which Ruby Dee received an Academy Award nomination, Body of Lies, Robin Hood, and the highly anticipated summer 2012 release Prometheus.
Mr. Costigan was an executive at Sony Pictures for 9 years. As executive vice president, production, he oversaw the acquisition, development, and production of – among many other movies – James Mangold's Girl, Interrupted, starring Winona Ryder and Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie; Guy Ritchie's Snatch; Milos Forman's The People vs. Larry Flynt, starring Academy Award nominee Woody Harrelson; McG's blockbuster Charlie's Angels; Gus Van Sant's acclaimed To Die For, starring Golden Globe Award winner Nicole Kidman; Andrew Niccol's first film, Gattaca; and Wes Anderson's debut feature, Bottle Rocket.
