Alec Baldwin creció en Massapequa, Long Island, donde su padre fue profesor de instituto durante 28 años y su madre crió a seis hijos: dos chicas, Beth y Jane, y cuatro chicos, Daniel, William, Stephen y él, que es el mayor, todos actores de cine y televisión. Estudiaba Derecho en la Universidad George Washington cuando unos compañeros le retaron a presentarse a unas pruebas para el Programa de Teatro de la Universidad de Nueva York. Le aceptaron y empezó a estudiar Arte Dramático en 1979. En 1980 le dieron un papel en la telenovela The Doctors, de NBC, en la que ha trabajado casi cada temporada desde entonces. A pesar de ser un actor muy solicitado en la gran pantalla, siempre ha intentado compaginar su deseo de comunicarse directamente con el público y nunca ha abandonado Broadway ni el teatro regional, además de aparecer en el programa Saturday Night Live, festivales literarios y miniseries.
Ha protagonizado numerosas películas entre las que mencionaremos The Hunt for Red October, Miami Blues, Prelude to a Kiss, Malicia, The Shadow, Glengarry Glen Ross, Heaven’s Prisoners, Ghost of Mississippi, Pearl Harbor. En 2004 fue nominado al Oscar al Mejor Actor Secundario por su papel en The Cooler, de Wayne Kramer, por el que ganó el Premio al Mejor Actor Secundario del Consejo Nacional de Críticos. Sus otros éxitos son The Last Shot, con Matthew Broderick, The Aviator, de Martin Scorsese, Elizabethtown, de Cameron Crowe, y Fun with Dick and Jane, de Dean Parisot, coprotagonizada por Téa Leoni. En 2006 le hemos visto en The Departed, de Martin Scorsese, con Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon y Jack Nicholson, y en Running with Scissors, con Annette Bening. Protagonizó también 30 Rock, una comedia de media hora de duración de NBC, con Tina Fey, Tracy Morgan y Jane Krakowski. Su productora El Dorado Pictures coprodujo la película The Confession, (por la que David Black ganó el Premio del Sindicato de Guionistas al Mejor Guión Adaptado) para Cinemax Television; Nuremberg, para Turner Network Television; State and Main, una comedia escrita y dirigida por David Mamet, y Second Nature, protagonizada por Powers Boothe, para TNT Productions.
Apoya causas de interés público y ecológico, así como a asociaciones para la obtención de fondos públicos en pro del arte, para la reforma de la financiación de campañas políticas, los derechos de los animales y el control de las armas. Es miembro del Consejo del Teatro de Bay Street (Sag Harbor, Long Island), el Consejo del Programa Pro Justicia del Centro Brennan de la Universidad de Nueva York, de la asociación People for the American Way y del Fondo Carol M. Baldwin para la Investigación del Cáncer de Mama, dedicado a su madre. Además, apoya con entusiasmo a la asociación Personas por el Tratamiento Ético a los Animales (PETA) y a la Sociedad para el Bienestar de los Animales de Circo (PAWS). Asimismo, apoya a la Guardería de East Hampton. Se graduó en la Universidad de Nueva York (Facultad Tisch de Bellas Artes) en 1994. Tiene una hija, Ireland Eliesse.
