In the village of St. Victoire the parish-clerk murders Mrs. Blanchard and takes the society's money, that the vicar gave her. He confesses his sin, and the vicar absolves him. The village is preparing for the elections and the anti-clerical party is getting organised. It comes in handy that Mrs. Blanchard's body is found in the vicar's wood-shed. Everything seems to prove against him. He is sentenced to life imprisonment and carried to the colonies. He cannot defend himself due to the seal of confession. Finally the parish clerk admits his guilt and the vicar is served justice: they beg his pardon. (texto oficial de la distribuidora)
