These urgent cases, where everything is at stake and Holmes has to solve things not so much on the go as on the fly, are my favourite. The funeral scene is one that even Hitchcock would be ashamed of.

What I liked the most was the classic moment when Watson is convinced he knows what’s going on, but he doesn’t.

La vieja mansión Shoscombe (1991) (E03)
Holmes solves a very dark mystery, examines a charred human bone, opens a coffin… This film has a lot, really. Watson plays more of a second fiddle this time, but it doesn't matter, he watches his brilliant colleague with the same fascination with which we watch Jeremy Brett's full commitment.

Another very elegantly solved case. Too bad Holmes didn't gather more evidence of innocence to make the ending more believable.

The Illustrious Client (1991) (E05)
I'm not familiar with Doyle's short story, so I'm missing the comparison this time, but the film is extraordinary. Holmes has a great adversary and the story can go almost any way. The scene when a battered Jeremy Brett shows up in Gruner's office with a gaze like some kind of angel of the apocalypse is flawless.

If you don’t know this case, get ready, because you might think you know what is going on, but Sherlock Holmes will always surprise you.
