Las dos caras de la verdad (1996)

inglés An excellent thriller with great acting performances (an awesome Edward Norton) and a very nice ending that takes it all to an even higher level. I was also pleased to see the friendly face of Terry O'Quinn from Lost.

Sweeney Todd: El barbero diabólico de la calle Fleet (2007)

inglés Musicals aren't exactly my cup of tea but this was a different cup of coffee (or maybe, slice of pie? :)). Burton obviously filmed from the heart, and spares no blood or love. And what does a quality film need besides those ingredients? Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Alan Rickman were all amazing. Maybe the five stars are a little too many, but I just haven't had my fill of Burton's visions yet.

La niebla (2007)

inglés This adaptation is faithful to the original and yet it will take your breath away at the end. Darabont has a knack for storytelling, and the actors under his leadership give the performances of their lifetimes. Plus, Thomas Jane is suited to the role of David like no-one else. The special effects are amazing (mainly the fog, because they leave room for the imagination), in the style of Faun's Labyrinth and Hellboy. In the end, you can say what Stephen King said at the press conference: "Whoever gives it away should hang by the balls in a draft." It’ll take your breath away.

El especialista (1994)

inglés Average thriller with a naked Sharon and a muscular Sly. It's a pity that the director couldn't make more out of the promising premise. But who would expect miracles from a guy named Luis Llosa?

American Gangster (2007)

inglés An excellent, atmospheric gangster movie. Perfect directing from Ridley Scott, excellent acting performances from Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe is further enhanced by an excellent screenplay. And Josh Brolin made a really good impression on me; he’s appearing in better and better roles these days.

Lost: Missing Pieces (2007) (serie)

inglés Nothing special, but Lost Pieces has certainly fulfilled its purpose, or maybe it still will. The last episode was really the most satisfying.

Expiación. Más allá de la pasión (2007)

inglés To be quite sincere, I’ve never liked this type of movie much, but this time I’m glad that I decided to make an exception and watch this one. Atonement is a wartime drama that has much more inside it than it seems at first glance. And the standard of the acting performances and directing make it impossible for me to give it anything less than a full set of stars.

Beowulf (2007)

inglés An excellent retelling of the poem of Beowulf. Zemeckis is a great director who is engaging and can keep the pace of the story going, but the new technologies have proven to be more negative than positive. It is hard to enjoy a battle scene while under attack by flagrant digital artificiality. Unfortunately, it is also clear that the movie was made for IMAX, and the long fly-bys and spears in the face are more intrusive than interesting. But maybe if we wait a few years for special effects teams to create new textures, “enliven" their eyes, and fix all the mistakes, we'll be pleasantly surprised. P.S. Silvestri's music is excellent.

No es país para viejos (2007)

inglés That's what I call courage — making a whole movie with no music. What's interesting is that I didn't mind at all. Otherwise, the Coen brothers play a classic game of cat and mouse, arming the cat with an air pistol (amazing idea by the way) and the mouse with a shotgun loaded with tent stakes. The atmosphere is built brilliantly, and the insertion of the philosophizing Tommy Lee Jones gives the story the right flair. The Oscars for Bardem and both directors are definitely deserved. I'm a little surprised about the award for best motion picture, but it's good that the golden statuette was given to this type of movie again. A slightly weak five stars.

Raines (2007) (serie)

inglés Pilot: Frank Darabont tips his hat at old detective movies where we don’t know who the murderer is until the very last minute. And Jeff Goldblum excels in the role of the “eccentric" Raines. I’m intrigued to see the coming episodes. Season one carries on with a pleasant and relaxed tempo. Better with every episode and the solution to cases isn’t usually terribly predictable. Raines visions make every case a little more special. I should mention the cute scene where Raines demands the photo of the woman whose head the murderer removed using a shotgun, because that’s how he sees women - headless. Or that sweet case where the murderer becomes the victim for a while and both of his hallucinations (the murderer and the murdered) fight against each other. It’s sad that the guys at NBC buried this series when it was panning out so excellently.
