Atmósfera cero (1981)

inglés A western pretending to be a dirty sci-fi flick set on a mining base on Io. In his role as a stubborn cop investigating strange cases of suicide that the evil corporation seems to have a hand in, Connery delivers one clever line after another. But the best is Frances Sternhagen as a cynical doctor with an inclination toward alcoholism. The laughable “action" climax shows just how much the genre has changed over the years.

Hilo mortal (1992)

inglés A 90s routine picture with an appallingly awful storyline about relationships, with people who tend to explode amusingly. It doesn’t have a shred of logic, because what woman in her right mind would want to leave Brosnan for somebody with a face like that - senator or not. The explosive water idea is great: they should do a remake.

The Outsider - Fish in a Barrel (2020) (episodio)

inglés I read it, so I know. The creators played around a bit with the overall atmosphere, giving a True Detective feel to it. And King has no problem with the mysterious and he can easily go overboard with bugaboos. The cast is excellent so far, in particular the ambiguous Bateman.

Bloodshot (2020)

inglés This resurrection of Universal Soldier for the new millennium didn’t really work. But it’s a good movie to watch while cooking Sunday lunch. Mr. Diesel does his very best and finally we can see him in a slightly different situation (other than sitting in a car), but he chose an appalling screenplay for it. The original idea isn’t bad, but the uninspired end product with the crucial twist of the movie given away in the trailer was not the best solution. Maybe next time!

Underwater (2020)

inglés I think this would make a cool video game. A pumped-up, slightly B-movie-ish sci-fi horror flick set in the Mariana Trench, where there isn’t much time for thinking. Because of that, however, the protagonists unfortunately have absolutely no character basis, so the viewer doesn’t really care that much when they kick the bucket. And that’s a bit of a shame. Stewart’s acting is actually really good and just a few brief flashbacks would have been enough to make the relationship between her and the captain a little deeper or something. The production design and visual effects are otherwise first-class; the station, the costumes and even Cthulhu look seriously good.

Sol rojo (1971)

inglés A spectacular cast in an unconventional western. The quest for the emperor’s sword/stolen gold makes Mifune and Bronson involuntary partners in the hunt for the sleazy bad guy in the form of Alain Delon, and the sharp viewer can immediately tell where the makers of Once Upon a Time in the East got their ideas from. It’s true that the humor in this movie is more cynical, but the one-liners are all the better for it. For anyone who’s ever played Red Dead Redemption II, this is like putting on a pair of old, comfy shoes again. If I’m cooking dinner, you’ll go hungry and you'll hurt.

Ozark - Season 2 (2018) (temporada)

inglés A solid continuation of the (im)morality of a slick financier and his polished family. It has the same half-life as Breaking Bad, but without the humor. The series' creators stick close to the serious narrative, and even the stumbling blocks that Marty has to deal with bring very few smiles to your face. Nor is building a casino with heroin producers as partners much fun when the FBI is sniffing around. There is no return from the Ozarks, and I hope the makers are already thinking about how to cap it all off. Otherwise, the build-up would start to turn into banality and that would be a shame.

The Gentlemen: Los señores de la mafia (2019)

inglés The Gentlemen is an outstanding, well-thought-out British gangster movie that Richie designed with a little more sophistication than we are used to seeing from him. The narration by the sleazy homosexual journalist played by Hugh Grant, exaggerated just enough to make it sound more cinematic, highlights the business sense of the protagonists and the importance of having reliable helpers. The acting performances are delightful (McConaughey really needed a role like this) and Colin Farrell gives a crowning performance in the role of the honorable trainer who doesn’t like getting mixed up in “gangster shit", but likes to pay his debts. A wealth of one-lines and a good, honest two hours of British entertainment. I just happen to have a bit of Japanese beef in the freezer.

Aves de presa (y la fantabulosa emancipación de Harley Quinn) (2020)

inglés Chaotically told banality about a girl who needed to take a shit. Although the role of Harley fits Margot like a glove, the solo stories about her do not work in the comic book, let alone in a film. The affected wisecracks and vain attempts to generate humor just aren’t funny. On top of that, the whole film is wrapped up in some sort of weird girl-power package, which is getting more and more annoying in films these days. Luckily, the action scenes are very well filmed and are original, so there is still something worth watching. In this film, McGregor looks a little like Bono and his “I want it and it’s mine" approach is a fairly refreshing interpretation of a villain. You totally forget the other would-be heroines even before you begin writing your review on FilmBooster. Crime pays.
