Alerta roja (2021)

inglés Reynolds is playing Reynolds as usual, The Rock is playing The Rock as usual, and Gadot isn’t acting at all (as usual). A fun and snappy, but pitifully unimaginative film (the budget paid for the central three actors, and there was clearly no money left for special effects, so it looks like a run-of-the-mill B-movie). In three days, I will have no memory of seeing the film. It will do as a way to pass a Saturday night. The lower your expectations, the more you'll enjoy it.

Dune (2021)

inglés My expectations were really high, but I ended up getting so much more. Dune is an absolute masterpiece, the best science fiction in years, with an amazing cast and Zimmer’s excellent score. It’s audio-visually polished and made for the big screen, even though it is "only" an intro to the upcoming second part. Most importantly, it’s a film that you have to see in a theater! Without the big screen and high-fidelity sound, you would be robbed of one of the best cinematic experiences in years.

Viuda Negra (2021)

inglés Black Widow currently holds the title of the "weakest Marvel movie ever". It is sloppily narrated, doesn't make much sense, and its terrible special effects set the entire superhero genre back 20 years or so. In fact, it's not even a superhero movie, just a run-of-the-mill action flick whose action scenes look truly pathetic. The typical Marvel humor is completely absent, which might not be that big of an issue. What's worse is that Black Widow has virtually zero connection to the MCU, rendering the film basically pointless. Scarlett got what she wanted from the Marvel big shots and got to star in a solo movie for which she was duly paid, only it was so forced that this entire film seems virtually irrelevant to the MCU, and it makes me sorry because Black Widow got an awesome send-off in Endgame.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021) (serie)

inglés One of the weakest contributions to the MCU since 2008. The main characters are likeable, unfortunately in a completely dull series and pathetically narrated story. The quality of some of the episodes is average, but most of them are downright terrible. It absolutely doesn't work as a whole, and the story is built up in such a way that it doesn't get interesting for even a second. The characters’ actions, their motivations and story twists, everything is so predictable and sloppy that I am surprised that the big shots at Marvel signed off on it at all. It may have had the ambition to come close to the atmosphere of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but that begins and ends with the visual style of the closing credits. WandaVision was a slightly above average series which at least had a decent amount of originality, but this work is truly a waste of time. If you keep track of all the MCU releases, you’ll probably watch this one, too. But if you mainly watch movies, you may as well skip these 6 episodes. You won’t miss out on anything important.

WandaVision (2021) (serie)

inglés Excellent Paul Bettany and especially Elizabeth Olsen in what seems to be an entertaining and original series in which you can enjoy various winks and references to events from the MCU and X-Men. As always, it gives rise to discussions and theories as to what each event refers to and what it will lead to in the future. However, the series finale fully shows that this is another generic Marvel story all the way, only spread out into 9 episodes. I wouldn’t mind the nice, but logically cheaper visuals compared to the movies, but what is much harder to see past is the fact that, apart from the three main characters, the rest of the acting performances are straight out of the dumbest DC series from the CW.

Descuida, yo te cuido (2020)

inglés I never thought that Rosamund Pike could play an even more cynical bitch than in Gone Girl. Little did I imagine how she would outdo herself and nail the character of total human scum so perfectly. It’s been a long time since I felt like strangling a character through the movie screen for two hours straight. Peter Dinklage also plays quite an asshole, but you can't help but root for him against Pike. In the end, the authors might have gone a little overboard with the unlikely events, but despite that, this movie about a slightly different version of the American dream is entertaining, with brilliant acting performances, and perhaps a satisfying ending. Although the authors seem to have gone soft towards the end.

Una joven prometedora (2020)

inglés An awesome #metoo blast and the most stylish movie of the year in one. Given that this is Emerald Fennell’s directorial debut, it's a real hit. It’s been a while since I’ve watched a movie that was so right up my alley. Of course, there are way too many contrivances in the script, but the amazing soundtrack more than makes up for them. Plus, Carey Mulligan is excellent in her total psycho mode and despite her wickedness in her quest for vengeance, you can’t help rooting for her.

Normal People (2020) (serie)

inglés The formative years of my generation perfectly captured with all the benefits as well as the problems brought about by the digitalization of life. The inability to fit in, communicate and express yourself clearly, problematic relationships, and pretense. All that is amplified by the fact that the characters are rather introverted, which is why the story makes even more sense to me. The soundtrack is good and the actors, especially the two protagonists, are absolutely perfect in their roles. But there is a hitch. The story is often frustrating, and the characters often behave irrationally or simply cannot communicate clearly, which can make the viewer just as frustrated. It was probably intentional, but the result is that a lot of people probably won’t finish watching the series, which is a shame. The year you were born will probably make a huge difference.

Muere otra vez (2020)

inglés I love films with a time loop and Boss Level sure is an enjoyable light movie, nevertheless, with the disadvantage of being neither as interesting (Source Code) nor as entertaining and visually stunning (Edge of Tomorrow) as the competition.

The Office (U.S.) (2005) (serie)

inglés By far the best comedy series of all time. I don't know how the rest of you passed the time during the first spring coronavirus wave, but what I did during those otherwise boring weeks and months was binge-watch all 9 seasons of The Office. I'd compare the experience to finding an oil field in a desert, but instead of oil, pure comedy gold was pouring out of the rig. I love humor based on awkward situations which is why I loved the British original, but it wasn't until the American remake that the sitcom, in the form of a mockumentary set in an office environment, really lived up to its full potential. A perfect cast, where Steve Carell stands out in particular. He is, hands down, an absolute genius. Most importantly, the legacy of this series lives on even after all these years. If any piece of pop culture can be considered a truly bottomless source of memes, it is the American version of The Office. S01: 10/10. S02: 10/10. S03: 10/10. S04: 10/10. S05: 10/10. S06: 10/10. S07: 10/10. S08: 10/10. S09: 10/10.
