The Late Edwina Black (1951)

inglés A well-made, intimate film that reminded me of Ryba ve čtyřech, with the performances leaning more towards a theatrical vibe. I wouldn't be surprised if it originated from a play; it had that kind of feel. But that's not a complaint; I quite enjoyed it, even though I pegged the killer right away, and surprisingly, it wasn't the gardener! If I had to pinpoint what I liked most about the film, it would definitely be the ever-growing sense of paranoia. / Lesson learned: Careful about what you drink. It's a universal rule that has always applied and still applies.

Jimmy Carr: Natural Born Killer (2024) (programa)

inglés Jimmy Carr is a prime example (even though partly Irish) that good old English humor isn't completely gone, it still has a pulse. It was a solid hour without a hint of political correctness. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and laughed all the way through. I'd been eagerly anticipating this special since Netflix notified me about it, and I dove right in. Jimmy Carr returned in fantastic form, undoubtedly managing to offend a wide spectrum of the perpetually offended, who then unleash a torrent of hateful hashtags. Amidst the laughs, I listened closely and caught some genuinely interesting thoughts. I'd wholeheartedly recommend this show to all mothers with a sense of humor; they'll undoubtedly get their money's worth (unlike those humorless fathers out there). As for me, I had a blast. / Lesson learned: When you take the plunge and attend a stand-up comedian's performance, try not to stand out too much and limit your vocal expressions to the minimum. Just a bit of advice.

Pared con pared (2024)

inglés Well, it was a romantic comedy, so if anyone expected a plot that would challenge their intellect or offer a surprising twist, they might have misunderstood the genre. I got exactly what I signed up for: a predictable, sometimes cute, often clichéd story that didn't exactly sweep me off my feet but didn't leave me cringing either. The main heroine was quite likable, and it was a surprise to learn she wasn't actually an actress (explains the singing!). The main hero, on the other hand, fit the neglected and worn-out role just right. Despite the story being somewhat weak and bordering on silly, I found myself not minding spending an hour and a half with it. That's probably why I'm giving it three stars. / Lesson learned: Got noisy neighbors? Invest in some soundproofing.

Neal Brennan: Blocks (2022) (programa)

inglés Today I decided to check out Neal Brennan's special from two years ago and it was quite the ride. Brennan had me laughing out loud, especially with bits like the anniversary shootout between the NRA and the US Army. But then, there were moments when the humor took a backseat. The mood shifted, the atmosphere grew heavy, and I realized that Bill Burr isn't the only comedian with a less-than-ideal childhood. Listening to Brennan, along with Burr and Taylor Tomlinson, talk about their childhood, it dawned on me that comedians are often more damaged than we might think. Stand-up seems to serve as a sort of therapy for them, and without their troubled pasts, they might not have the ability to make people laugh the way they do. / Lesson learned: Keith is probably going to be Keith is likely to be a bit of a grump.

Neal Brennan: Crazy Good (2024) (programa)

inglés I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from this special as I was unfamiliar with Neal Brennan's work, so I went in with an open mind. I found myself thoroughly entertained. Neal Brennan's humor was subtle yet effective, and the entire performance exuded calm and comfort. His witty observations managed to tickle my funny bone in just the right way. While I didn't find myself in fits of laughter throughout, I genuinely enjoyed the experience. / Lesson learned: "Trying to make a woman have an orgasm is like ordering an Uber," I haven't heard that one before:-D

Emily la estafadora (2022)

inglés Aubrey Plaza is among my favorite actresses, and her performance in this film did not disappoint. However, I found myself somewhat let down by the screenplay, which lacked depth and consistency. At times, it seemed to veer away from the genre, only to circle back without much cohesion. My main issue, though, lay with the overall tone. While I didn't dislike Emily as a character, I couldn't fully get behind her actions. She crossed moral boundaries repeatedly, showing no qualms about theft, deceit, or even potential violence. Sure, she was a woman, so what? Should I root for her because she was in debt and because her being convicted of a violent crime prevented her from getting a better job? Talk about double standards. /Lesson learned: Slopes can be slippery.

The Last Kingdom - Episode 4 (2022) (episodio)

inglés The storyline felt noticeably better than in the previous episode. However, I can't help but feel a tinge of nostalgia for the original charm that once defined the series. The departure of a key character was inevitable, yet somewhat drawn-out. Plus, the theological discussion felt unnecessary and detracted from the focus on depicting the dark realities of the Middle Ages, which I hoped to see more of. A pretty average episode. / Lesson learned: God doesn't talk much.

1917 (2019)

inglés Well, that was an interesting ride. The storyline certainly had its moments, reminiscent of Saving Private Ryan, only the Great War was missing. Sure, there were some explosions here and there, a few shots fired, but it all felt a bit disjointed. Machine guns were toted around like accessories, the Germans seemed to disappear from the frame, and the frequent moments of silence left me puzzled. I couldn't quite grasp the significance of the scene with the Frenchwoman and the foundling, although the Albatros crash-landing had me intrigued. Nevertheless, the film's main contribution was its stark portrayal of the absurdity of wartime fervor. / Lesson learned: There is none. Current events serve as stark reminders of that.

Antracita (2024) (serie)

inglés For me, the main problem of the series was the fact that it was French. I've never been a fan of French cinema (with honorable exceptions). It felt like a wild, untamed ride, teeming with peculiar characters in a town where familial bonds trumped all, and where logic took a backseat. Still, I won't completely write off the series. It did have its moments of humor and intrigue, and just because it didn't win me over doesn't mean it couldn't charm someone else. / Lesson learned: When exploring an old mine, bring along your trusty sister for company.

Antracita - El equilibrio del mundo (2024) (episodio)

inglés The finale was extremely unbalanced. The first three quarters felt like a jumble of chaotic and illogical nonsense, leaving me scratching my head. However, the last stretch was somewhat more coherent compared to the series' usual standards. I wouldn't say I had a blast, but I also wasn't bored out of my mind. The ending, much like the rest of the series, left me with mixed feelings. / Lesson learned: Romantic love between siblings isn't exactly in fashion.
