The Mystery of the Leaping Fish (1916)

inglés I'm probably not offending anyone in particular when I write that this Holmesian parody is really an unprecedented silliness. But remarkable, of course. The humor you will see here is in no way comparable to the "humor" of contemporary SOMETHING-movie parodies. It's very, very, very simple, one-note, and makes no sense, just like the story (or rather "story"). However, it was precisely because of this undisguised simplicity that the film caught my attention. Douglas Fairbanks just does more and more dope and acts extremely goofy from start to finish, and the others aren't much better. If the whole thing had half the runtime and there was no protracted beach passage, it would not be less stupid, but certainly more brisk and hopefully more fun.

John Cleese Live! - Alimony Tour, The (2010)

inglés A very good, but unfortunately short performance for my taste. It's not that I don't like to see Cleese's famous and lesser-known scene(s) with his own commentary, but I enjoyed the beginning of the show much more, when he was going after that beast of an ex-wife who might have skinned him if she knew he'd sell her or at least trade her for something a bit more fancy, and then all the biographical bits and pieces in his unmistakable delivery. Seriously, the inserts from Fawlty Towers, the Circus, and Wanda just held it back.___P. S. This year, Cleese's autobiography, ummm never mind..., which I can only recommend, was published in Czech.

Příběh se starou lenoškou (1972) (telepelícula)

inglés I read The Pickwick Papers so long ago that I barely know about it anymore, and I don't really remember this story. However, a relaxed Dickensian atmosphere radiates from it, making it a joy to watch. I was just a bit bothered by the colloquial Czech used by the main characters - after all, I would have expected a bit more refined speech from them, which wouldn't have been a hindrance and wouldn't have interfered with the humor.

Priključenija Šerloka Cholmsa i doktora Vatsona: Ochota na tigra (1980) (telepelícula)

inglés Watson has a very hard time carrying it, and so the first half of this episode is more about boredom than any investigation, or even entertainment. Holmes' return makes many things better - Watson's unenviable situation and the viewing experience. By the way, I really like the opening credits of this series, which have always been a little different, but always imaginative.

Crueles intenciones (1999)

inglés The fact that this is a classic novel transferred to modern times bothers me least of all. What’s worse is that the unsympathetic Ryan Phillippe is not a particularly good actor, and the same can be said for Sarah Michelle Gellar, and the result is nothing more than a mildly irritating one-off spectacle in which, except perhaps for Reese Witherspoon's tears, everything is fake.

También somos seres humanos (1945)

inglés A truly unknown, but nevertheless excellent war film. It's not about battles (not that they aren't there) or who is fighting against whom, but simply about people. Burgess Meredith acts well, but his Ernie Pyle is just primarily a reporter who sees it all, nothing more, nothing less. The attention is thus drawn to Robert Mitchum and various gradually pointed stories, such as the one with the gramophone. "How old are you, Ernie?" - "Forty-three." - "I'm twenty-six. If I had known that I would live to be forty-three, I would not have been worried about the war." - "As you like. I'm worried about living to forty-four."

La quinta ola (2016) ¡Boo!

inglés This movie can't possibly entertain even the teenagers it was obviously made for. It's a patchwork film on the level of The Host, which it also resembles in that an otherwise certainly good actress throws away her talent in the lead role. Unfortunately, when there is a stupid script, in the hands of a director without a single idea, neither Chloë Grace Moretz, nor Liev Schreiber, nor anyone, can do anything about it.

Los diez mandamientos (1923)

inglés The eleventh commandment for viewers of this film might be: "After the fiftieth minute, you'll keep watching." Around that time, the generous biblical prologue ends and the story from the "present" begins, which may not even rely on the Ten Commandments, but which nevertheless offers a very compelling relationship drama. A bold idea that worked out.
