Pena de muerte (1995)
A profound and intense experience. A gripping drama about the need for truth, the difficulty of accepting the truth and the courage to look death in the eye with peace of mind. Brilliantly written, brilliantly directed and phenomenally acted by the lead duo. Susan Sarandon deserved the Oscar, Sean Penn only got a nomination, but you will never forget his character of a death-row inmate. It also got nominations for best film and direction. I must not forget the great title track by Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam and Pakistani musician Nusrat Fateh. I recommend it to all supporters of the death penalty, maybe they’ll change their views...
Fantomas (1964)
A classic that has not been damaged by the ravages of time at all. Well, perhaps a little. Some scenes seem a bit naive today and viewers addicted to the action blockbusters of the last few years will probably get bored. However, those who like to reminisce nostalgically about those years when they sat in a totally packed cinema and had royal fun during Fantomas's pursuit will probably like to repeat the mysterious villain. I am one of them. In this case, the only thing left to say is bon apetit. PS: I really loved Fantomas’s submarine :)
El cuchillo en el agua (1962)
Solo for two men, one woman and one sailboat. Roman Polanski proves that it only takes a little to make a great film, which was graced with an Oscar nomination.
Videodrome (1983)
A dull-eyed Kurt Russell – about the same ghostly expression I had when I saw what Paul Anderson, creator of the great Event Horizon and the entertaining Mortal Kombat, had managed to produce.
Yo impongo mi ley a sangre y fuego (1979)
Do you know what qualifications a good police commissioner should have for the job? He should have no problem driving his car into an apartment, burning down a restaurant or blowing up a house. That’s what Belmondo did. Our Interior Minister has something to think about.
Fuego en el cuerpo (1981)
A very ingeniously constructed thriller. Kathleen Turner is every bit the equal of Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct. She plays a bitch so cunning and heartless it's chilling. The film's conclusion is indeed "optimistic". As life itself :)
La lista de Schindler (1993)
For this masterpiece, Spielberg has my boundless respect. And the fact that he literally force-fed it to Universal increases my respect for him. One of the greatest films of all time, a film that alarms, awes, shocks and moves...
Atrapado en el tiempo (1993)
Smart, sensitive, funny, touching, all that in the comedy Groundhog Day. A sweet Andie MacDowell and a Bill Murray that is funny and will stir your sympathy. That time loop is not that bad, there are moments where I wouldn’t mind your place Bill…
Par-impar (1978)
Odds and Evens is bollocks, but it has its charm and it doesn’t let me get bored. And Terence and Bud are so likeable.
Abyss (1989)
When Cameron wants to do something, like shooting an entire film in a water tank, he just does it and the result is always perfect. Although this film wasn't nearly as big a hit as Terminator 2, I put it higher in James Cameron's filmography, and it’s further proof of his immense perfectionism – he just can't make a bad film. And since I've seen the director's cut, I have to say that the extended ending with a stunning (for its time) visual effects scene puts this film in a completely different light.
