He was born in 1958 in Morocco, and spent his childhood between that country and Algeria. He did an Arts degree in France, and started in cinema as production assistant on films by Leos Carax and Jacques Demy. He made his debut in 1990 with L’amour, Perspectives du Cinéma Award at Cannes. This was followed by titles such as Sabine (1993), Muriel fait le désespoir de ses parents (1995), Samia (2000), The Betrayal (2005) and The Disintegration (2011), programmed at prestigious festivals such as Venice, Toronto and Rotterdam. He also directed several productions for television. Fatima (2015) was a great milestone in his career.
