Manuel Michel studied Spanish Literature at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Later, between 1954 - 1960, he went to Paris where he studied at the IDHEC (Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinematographiques). Back in Mexico, he taught at the department of Political Science (UNAM) and founded, along with Carlos Velo, the CCC (Centro de Estudios Cinematográficos). He wrote three books: Aspectos del cine francés (Aspects of French Cinema) 1964; El cine y el hombre contemporáneo (Cinema and Contemporary Man, with a foreword by Carlos Fuentes) 1962 and Al pie de la imagen: críticas y ensayos, 1968. His posthumous book, Una nueva cultura de la imagen: ensayos sobre cine y televisión, compiles a series of essays about cinema and tv and was published in 1994.
