Antes de cumplir 20 años se había consolidado como actor y dramaturgo. Su primera intervención en una película fue en 1934, como actor. Cinco años después comenzó a trabajar como guionista para British International Pictures y también trabajó con Alfred Hitchcock durante la filmación de Jamaica Inn (1939) como asesor de diálogo.
