John Michael McDonagh

Born in London to Irish parents. He grew up in the neighbourhood of Elephant & Castle. John, along with his younger brother Martin (playwright, scriptwriter and director) travelled frequently to Ireland to visit family, place where this film is situated. McDonagh made his first foray into writing and directing with The Second Death, a short film released in 2000. Three years later he received numerous nominations for the Australian Film Institute awards as well as the Film Critics Circle of Australia for his script for the feature film Ned Kelly, directed by Gregor Jordan. The Guard is his feature film directorial debut.
