Biografía

Director, producer, screenwriter and actor. He began his career in the theater, collaborating with Konstantin Stanislavsky and Vsevolod Meyerhold. He directed several films in Russia and Germany before moving to the United States, where he worked with the production company Empire Productions, which specialized in Spanish-language cinema. He came to Mexico in the early 1930s, where he met Soviet filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein and participated in the film ¡Que viva México! He is considered a pioneer of Mexican sound cinema, and boasts an extensive filmography, which includes the classics Hand to Hand, The Woman of the Port, and Águila o sol.
