Nació en Glenrothes, Fife (Escocia), donde fue alumno de la Auchmuty High School. Se formó en el Colegio Galés de Música y Arte Dramático, donde recibió el premio al "Estudiante más Prometedor de Arte Dramático" antes de realizar su debut en televisión en 1992, en los populares programas de la televisión británica, Taggart y Lovejoy, interpretando poco después un papel protagonista en la miniserie Tell Tale Hearts.
