Sinopsis(1)

Lieutenant Thomas Glahn lives as a stranger in a small fishing community in the far north of Norway. He inhabits a hut on the edge of the forest, content in the freedom of his solitude and using the settlement only to buy necessary provisions and powder for his gun. One day he meets Edvarda, the daughter of the local trading magnate Herr Mack. The two experience a spontaneous mutual attraction. Glahn visits Edvarda at home sometimes, and she comes to him in his hut at night. For a brief period - no more than three or four weeks - their happiness is of an ecstatic, uncomplicated kind. Then intellect begins to play its part; pride, calculation, thoughts of dominance. Their relationship develops into a psychological struggle. Neither of them is able or willing to make the gesture of submission which might turn intense romantic eroticism into a stable, viable love. (Norsk Filminstitutt)
