Nino is ten years old and lives in Ecuador. His parents are dead and he lives in the orphanage run by Padre Juan. Nino's best friend is Perrito, the little dog he rescued from the river and smuggled into the orphanage. Padre Juan's Christian charity does not include dogs, Perrito is found and thrown out into the street. So Nino runs away, and he and Perrito discover together the dangers and mysteries of the city. He meets Gringo Viejo, an old sailor, who reveals a whole new world to him. Nino learns how to earn his living, shining shoes. But Padre Juan and the police are in hot pursuit of the runaway boy, and he must move on.
