La película repasa la vida privada de Franklin Delano Roosevelt, senador y después gobernador del estado de Nueva York, además del único presidente de los Estados Unidos elegido durante tres mandatos consecutivos (1933-1945). Dejando a un lado su intensa actividad política, el filme se centra en su lucha personal contra la poliomielitis, enfermedad que contrajo en 1921 con 39 años, que le dejó paralizado de cintura para abajo. La desesperación por encontrar una cura le llevó a probar numerosos tratamientos, hasta llegar al balneario de Warm Springs en Georgia, donde se sometió a los efectos terapéuticos de sus aguas termales. En este complejo, que terminó comprando y convirtiendo en el primer centro de tratamiento de la polio, Franklin D. Roosevelt encontró la fortaleza mental y física necesaria para hacer frente a la enfermedad y retomar su vida política, donde le aguardaba un futuro repleto de éxitos. (Movistar+)

The fact that HBO decided to turn the story of Franklin D. Roosevelt into a movie is definitely very commendable. There is nothing to be said against the quality of this movie. And given that it’s a TV movie, the story isn’t too bad either. You see, the authors decided to put politics aside and create a story about how Franklin got a clean soul. After I saw this movie and admired the excellent performance given by Kenneth Branagh, who undergoes quite a development over the course of the movie, I have a similar opinion of this president as every American who lived in his era. Well, it’s hard to say how many people who lived in his era are still alive today, but it they were around, they would confirm that Franklin was definitely worth it. He learnt how to be human… and that’s something not every statesman can do.
