Das Herz ist ein dunkler Wald

Marie and her husband Thomas live with their two children in a brick house in a middle-class neighbourhood. One morning when the musician drives off to a rehearsal without his violin, Marie takes the instrument and follows him on her bicycle. She is surprised that he drives past the concert hall and stops at another brick bungalow. Marie rings the bell – Anna, a colleague of Thomas', opens the door to a personal nightmare: Thomas is sitting there at the breakfast table in a room very much like their own living room – together with his lover and their son Paul. He has a second secret family in a second house in the same city. Marie's world collapses. She demands an explanation from Thomas and follows him to an evening concert at a masked ball in a run-down castle. Marie gradually uncovers her husband's secret. As her life falls to pieces, a dark urge for freedom grows in her heart. (Berlinale)
