Sinopsis(1)

During the Spanish Civil War, children of Spanish Republican freedom fighters were evacuated to the Soviet Union. When they arrive in Leningrad, the children are provided with decent accommodation where they are well looked after by the Russian authorities. In casas de niños, the children are provided with schooling and are also given the opportunity to play music, paint or dance ballet. After the outbreak of the Second World War and the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, all plans to send the children home are postponed to the distant future; worse still, the children are directly affected by the war when they are sent by train to the Ural Mountains. Following the defeat of the Germans in Russia, the children are able to return to Moscow and Leningrad. But there is still no sign of their being able to return to Spain. It is not until 1956, once many of these children have reached adulthood and founded families of their own, that the governments finally come to an agreement which enables the children to return home at last.
