Joan Crawford stars in this powerful romance as Marian, a beautiful factory worker who dreams of leaving poverty and the confines of small-town life behind her. While daydreaming by the railroad tracks, she meets a wealthy New Yorker who convinces her to escape to the big city. Determined to make it, Marian leaves behind her childhood boyfriend, Al Manning (Wallace Ford), and her simple life for dreams of a glamorous life in elegant Manhattan. When she arrives, she meets Mark Whitney (Clark Gable), a powerful and charming young lawyer who instantly sweeps her off her feet. What initially begins as a relationship of convenience becomes true love as Mark and Marian spend years together and Marian becomes the glamorous woman of class and distinction that she always dreamed of. There is only one problem: Mark, an idealistic divorcé, refuses to marry Marian because he is afraid of suffering through another divorce. But Marian fears he is ashamed of her lowly background, and she is desperate to become more than his mistress. When Al Manning reappears, newly wealthy, he is bound and determined to win back his childhood sweetheart, tearing Marian and Mark apart forever. (texto oficial de la distribuidora)
