Building an entire film on the premise that a monkey "kidnaps" an elephant and they travel across America without experiencing anything truly interesting is indeed quite bold. Well, I don't think the boldness paid off, even though the second part of the film tries to be unnecessarily sentimental and give the whole journey some meaning.
