Ben Hecht wrote, produced and directed this fascinating character study of the desolate world of losers and two bit hustlers living in the gritty underworld of New York City. Playing an unsuccessful show girl, Hayworth is absolutely stunning in this solemn mixture of fantasy and reality. Both Hecht and Fairbanks were unfamiliar with Hayworth when she was cast, never imagining that she would become a superstar. They were impressed with the results, as were the critics.
