1952. Bill Rohan, de 18 años, pasa su vida soñando en la casa de su familia, a orillas del río, a la espera de ser llamado a filas por dos años por el servicio militar obligatorio. Cada mañana, Bill nada en el río y suspira por una bella muchacha que pasea en bicicleta a través de los caminos cercanos al río. Ese idilio se romperá ante la dura realidad del campo de entrenamiento. Allí se encontrará con Percy, un bromista amoral, y juntos trazarán la caída del sargento Bradley, su incesante torturador. It is always possible to look at war and the military critically. John Boorman also combined it with a sarcastic approach, making this film appropriately tense, funny, and biting. It's just right, and it isn't grittier or deeper than that. And so the film remains mainly a criticism with interesting characters, and there are no truly heated moments.
