Dheepan es un guerrero tamal de Sri Lanka. Para huir de la guerra civil, y después de ver morir a su familia, decide asociarse con Yalini e Illayaal, una mujer y una niña a las que hará pasar por su esposa y su hija. El objetivo de este engaño es obtener más fácilmente el derecho de asilo en Francia. Los tres desconocidos, que ignoran el idioma de su nuevo país de acogida, se ven obligados a parecer una familia ante los demás. Instalados en los suburbios de París, en una de las zonas más turbulentas de la ciudad, Dheepan trabajará como conserje para poder subsistir. Será un entorno difícil, marcado por la violencia, con el trasfondo del mercado de la droga, las redadas de la policía, y esta familia "de mentira" que trata de no morirse de hambre y desesperación. Audiard is, of course, a skilled filmmaker, and he proves it in many places, but otherwise Dheepan resembles a torso composed of many pressing humanistic themes, which are just outlined without working with them more systematically. The film therefore disintegrates in the middle in quite strange motivations and emotional twists. The finale is an evocation of Taxi Driver, but feels more like a frustrated Tamil Rambo from the suburbs of Paris. It strikes me as a clueless attempt at a commentary on contemporary geopolitics, which plays the most accessible string. In addition, the film is marked by the fact that it was finished under great pressure and feels as if certain parts are missing. The Palme d'Or in competition with Assassin and Saul fia is, in my view, a purely political decision. [Cannes 2015]

A film where you just know it can't have a pleasant course. And that's exactly what Dheepan offers. A man from Sri Lanka, who fled because of the war, settles in Paris only to find out that violence simply cannot be avoided. Violence is everywhere, even in this civilized world, which is the saddest part.
