A powerful existential drama about a woman who, despite all the adversity of fate, managed to keep a good heart. Who among us can say that about ourselves? Watching The Woman Who Left will give you enough time to realize that you have no idea what it means to live a hard life. To a keen observer, the thoroughly realistic portrayal of impoverished neighborhoods in the Philippines, supported by beautiful black-and-white cinematography, will definitely stimulate reflection. Even though the film is almost four hours long, it is worth watching if only because of how well it is able to work with black and white cameras, even in this day and age. It is indeed very slow, this isn't an action revenge story, but it's a Filipino reflection on life in a society that is by no means perfect, but it is what it is. ()
