On 28 November 2014, within the space of a few hours, 25 children and 4 teachers suddenly fainted at a village school in the west of Kazakhstan. The regional hospital gave an unusual explanation for the unusual event: all lost consciousness due to overwork. The children's parents would have none of it. The real reason was obvious: fumes from the nearby Karachaganak gas fields were polluting the air. Officials, long reluctant to act, succumbed to public pressure and could do nothing but take action. This short journalistic film tracks the struggle of parents trying to protect their children's health against a corrupt state vitally dependent on the gas industry. (One World)
