One of France's greatest living directors elaborates the true-life story of a World War I soldier who fled the battlefield and disguised himself as a woman to avoid arrest. As happily married Paul becomes accustomed to cross-dressing, he discovers long-dormant sexual preferences. After the French government grants amnesty to deserters, a promoter exploits Paul's story and stages a ribald cabaret show. Téchiné crafts an indelible portrait of one man's tumultuous life journey.
