En los difíciles años 30 en Norteamérica, una viuda y su familia trata de sacar adelante su granja de Texas. Son los años de la Gran Depresión en Waxahachie, Texas. Edna Spalding (Sally Field) acaba de perder a su marido en un tiroteo accidental y se ha quedado sola y con dos hijos. También con una hipoteca de 240 dólares y una propiedad amenazada de 40 acres. Entre la gente del lugar está el Sr. Will (John Malkovich), un huésped ciego que ve muy claro el fanatismo de su época, Moze (Danny Glover), un hombre negro que sabe demasiado, incluyendo su sitio en una ciudad sureña dominada por los blancos, y también Wayne, Margaret y Viola, todos forman parte de un ambiente de profunda depresión que lo envuelve todo. I guess I haven’t seen a movie that would present a better description of the situation in the USA during the economic crisis. Excellent acting performances by Sally Field, Danny Glover and John Malkovich come together with a story that includes all the positive and negative things that you could encounter at those times. Get ready for tornadoes, a sea of cotton, a black guy… Then also for people who respect people of all races, but also for people who dress up in white robes and who are trying to exterminate black people. This film contains all those things and it manages to join all that into such a nice human story that it’s a pleasure to watch it for the almost two hours.
