Viva la Vulva

(telepelícula)

Sinopsis(1)

We live in a culture ruled by the powerful penis. We can see it depicted in detail in every anatomy textbook, various versions of its name have become commonly used, and it basically is no longer considered taboo. However, female genitals are quite the opposite case. In the Austrian television documentary, talking heads explore in a playful and humorous way the patterns through which patriarchal society pushes female sexuality to the background. This makes it a powerful weapon in the hands of women who are aware of this oppression. A vulva here represents a symbolic value as well as the natural richness of the female body. The alteration of speakers, archival materials, and aptly selected music makes the film pacier and even more dynamic. (Academia Film Olomouc)

inglés Viva la Vulva offers a comprehensive and detailed view of the female sexual organ, which – compared to the male one – is still perceived differently and with some disrespect in society. The film depicts many interesting facts of everyday life that deserve space for reflection: from (feminine) derogatory words, to the absence of vulva shapes in language, to the perception of female sexuality and the violent absurdity of female circumcision. There is certainly no doubt about the injustice and contempt towards the female gender – even in our times – and this film uses interviews and references to various works of art to make this point in an informative and approachable way.
