La serie de episodios que conformaban The Beatles Anthology fue deliberada en orden cronológico, partiendo de los primeros años desde la formación del grupo en 1957 hasta su disolución en abril de 1970. La narración de los acontecimientos, a medida que se suceden imágenes de archivo que detallan la historia del grupo, corre a cargo de sus propios componentes, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison y Ringo Starr, a través de entrevistas realizadas y conducidas por Jools Holland. Las declaraciones de John Lennon proceden de entrevistas realizadas a lo largo de su vida, especialmente desde 1970 hasta el 8 de diciembre de 1980.
The Beatles Anthology, cuyo contenido tomaría forma a lo largo de cinco años de producción, sería publicado posteriormente en VHS y en DVD el 31 de marzo de 2003 por Apple Records.

My rock heart has always been with Pink Floyd, but I have to admit that the band that most significantly influenced 20th century rock music, its direction, sound and development for many decades to come was The Beatles. Their first albums, the ones that were so awfully happy with multiple vocals ("...yeeee, yeeee, yeeee..."), never really appealed to me. But from “Revolver” onwards, their work became the most important thing rock music has ever produced. The Beatles suddenly stopped relying on simple rock 'n' roll basics and brought a lot of inventiveness, influenced by eastern (e.g. Indian) elements, they were not afraid to experiment with other genres, even psychedelic rock, which was just beginning, and they incorporated orchestral elements into their music, which was unprecedented and unheard of in rock 'n' roll until then. And all this with great musical inventiveness. Moreover, “The White Album” from 1968 is in my eyes the best rock album of all time, together with Pink Floyd's “Dark Side of the Moon”.
