Although it might seem that the influence of the French New Wave is irreversible, Volker Schlöndorff retains his own style and his excellent films are provocative in content and not in form, and thus I am completely satisfied. While Young Törless arrived like a bolt from the blue that no one was prepared for, a decade later one could but revel. The choice of a not-very-well-known theme through the attractive novel by Marguerite Yourcenar became another excellent springboard for a film full of extraordinary experiences. Regarding the acting, I most enjoyed Valeska Gert's jovial old woman and delighted in the hopelessness of the situation. I can fully recommend this. ()
