In the 1950s, the Windward Islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao were largely unknown to most Dutch people. In an attempt to change this, many films were made about life in these overseas territories. The beautifully painted houses by the water in Willemstad make it clear that the islands may be remote, but there are also commonalities in the way of life. Scenes in a classroom, where black and white children listen to Dutch history, reveal the islands’ ties with Holland. The narration may give the film a pedantic feel, but beautiful images of Caribbean nature are a feast for the eyes. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
