Sinopsis(1)

On 30 September 1991 a coup-d'état took place on Haiti which forced elected president Jean-Bertrand Aristide to go into exile for three years. Haiti: coup the grace? follows the president from the moment of his deposition to his return in 1994. The filmmakers accompanied him on trips to the United States, Middle America and Europe. They also visited Haiti, and found out that the repressive regime was torturing and murdering many Haitians. For the filmmakers, Aristide's return to Haiti is not a joyous occasion. In exchange for his return, the filmmakers believe, Aristide was forced to make great concessions to the American political establishment. They think that Aristide underwent a development from "only the priest of the poor" to "a cherished symbol of neo-liberal American policy". The filmmakers are deeply disappointed in the man they had once pinned their hopes on. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
