1940, Japón. La noche anterior al estallido de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el comerciante local Yusaku Fukuhara deja a su esposa Satoko en casa y viaja a Manchuria con su sobrino. Allí es testigo casual de un acto bárbaro y decide tomar medidas para revelarlo al mundo. It might seem like it would be action-packed and extremely suspenseful, but it's not. That's not quite Kurosawa's style. This is pure drama full of pretense. Despite being set during WWII, with secret police wandering around and military secrets falling into the hands of ordinary people, it's an intimate film with perfect sets and costumes. Everything is tuned to a grim grey, ignorance combined with lofty goals. But if you take the period-ness out of it, it's a film about love and betrayal and the complexity of relationships, their transformation and permanence. And as such, I liked the film. Plus, Aoi Yū and Takahashi Issei were great.
