Huida a medianoche (1988)

inglés A decent crime comedy from the late 80s, with a somewhat dragged-out runtime that results in duller moments throughout the film. The screenplay is fairly simple, but Robert De Niro's acting saves it to a certain extent. Overall impression: 70%.

Noche de miedo II (1988)

inglés For a sequel, it is weaker, but both the script and the style try to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor, so those who were captivated by the first installment of the horror comedy will most likely be satisfied with this one. I missed seeing Amanda Bearse in the role of the protagonist's girlfriend. Unlike the first film, this one does not work so much as a horror but rather as a comedy with a lot of gags. It is exactly in the style of successful sequels, with more of everything, including vampires. Overall impression: 55%.

Amelie (2001)

inglés Amelie can be considered the commercial and artistic pinnacle of Jean-Pierre Jeunet's work. The film was enjoyed by practically everyone except for French critics, who criticized the excessive idealization of present-day Paris in the film. Jeunet himself admitted that Montmartre, as he filmed it, doesn't actually exist anymore, but in his movie, it's not about realism but about poetic exaggeration, playfulness, and imagination. It's a very positive spectacle, an unconventional romance, full of clever scenes, funny situations, and the charm of Audrey Tautou, who built a decent career on the back of this comedy. Overall impression: 95%.

Ghost, más allá del amor (1990)

inglés This is one of those movies that deliberately tries to play with the viewer's emotions. The squeezing of emotions was already unpleasant to me when it was made, and it was intensified by the fact that I don't really like the central acting trio... Overall impression: 50%.

El escondite (2005)

inglés With this film, there is quite a noticeable effort to create a new Psycho, a dark psychothriller with a touch of horror, which is based on a significant revelation. Unfortunately, it doesn't come close to the qualities of Psycho, not even remotely. The film starts slowly, but as long as it works with hints and utilizes the talented Dakota Fanning, it's still fine. However, when the big revelation comes, it's simply forced and unbelievable, especially considering the actions of that girl. Furthermore, the finale is clichéd and dragged out. Overall impression: 55%.

Control Room (2004)

inglés A very interesting documentary about an alternative news channel from the Middle East, where there is an interesting confrontation between Western and Arab visions of political events, when, for example, the Palestinian conflict or the war in Iraq is viewed through the frustrated eyes of local residents. Al Jazeera strives to bring public quality in the style of the British BBC where other media are either state-owned or restricted by strict censorship. Overall impression: 75%.

V hlavní roli Gustáv Husák (2008) (telepelícula)

inglés The theatrical segment is unnecessary and in this form, it distracts and delays. The film should have had a shorter runtime and stuck to statements from collaborators, historians, and family friends, confronting them with facts. The documentary provides a lot of information, but its quality fluctuates. Overall impression: 55%.

Hollywood Rivals (2009) (serie)

inglés An interesting perspective on the lives and works of famous Hollywood stars, conceived as a competition between iconic figures of the film world that the media or life pitted against each other. For those interested not only in movies but also in what lies behind them, it is an extremely attractive behind-the-scenes view that has plenty of entertaining elements. Overall impression: 80%.

Wiedźmin (2002) (serie)

inglés I can only review the series, but I didn't last longer than eight episodes with it. Undoubtedly, in the history of film and television, there are much weaker works in the fantasy genre. However, compared to Sapkowski's excellent literary source, the result is quite awkward. The weaker screenplay, which also differs from the books in many ways, the uneven acting performances, and a noticeably lower budget couldn't be saved by Michal Zebrowski, who was a good casting choice for the role (and possesses a very decent acting range), or by the several Polish acting aces who appeared in minor roles. From such strong source material, a much better spectacle could have emerged and a much greater mystique could have emanated from it. Overall impression: 35%.

In a Dark Place (2006)

inglés This is a film thematically similar to Kubrick's The Shining, which focuses on mapping the dark places of the human psyche and the disintegration of one unfortunate person in a remote location within a small community. There are moments of decent atmosphere and overall acceptable performances, and especially in the first half, the director succeeds in creating shots with camera and music that evoke an atmosphere of alienation, confinement, and coldness. In the second half, where he also uses montage-like editing, it's not that great, the screenplay could have been a bit more sophisticated, and it is not even close to The Shining. However, it does deserve three stars. Overall impression: 55%.
