A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish (2019)

inglés I love all the Cinderella stories of all varieties so much, it's quite a guilty pleasure for me, so I'll occasionally close both eyes and let the bullshit intoxicate me. But this? Good God, this is truly awful. Very, very bad. A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish offers nothing, adds nothing, doesn't evoke the Christmas spirit, doesn't impress with its acting or singing, doesn't impress with the story either.nothing, adds nothing, doesn't evoke the Christmas spirit, doesn't impress with the acting or singing, doesn't impress with the story either. Unfortunately, it doesn't even fall into the average, but rather into the sewage. A waste of time.

A Korean Odyssey (2017) (serie)

inglés If I had to describe the flow of watching the series: let's see what comes out of this -> hmmm, why not -> boy, this is a bit boring -> has it been this illogical this whole time? -> the penultimate episode is pretty good -> why did the last one totally kill it? That's how it would have ended up. Basically, this show doesn't have much to offer besides your favorite actors and the interactions between the Monkey and Devil King. If glitz is enough for you, take it. If you want an interesting story, my advice is to try the next house down. I was honestly looking forward to it, but in the end... unfortunately the main character was completely useless and overall her character was portrayed so inconsistently that I didn't really know what to think of her anymore. Apart from morsels of lighter moments, you wanted to murder her, and you actually wondered what was supposed to be appealing about her to fall in love with... And then the whole priestess/shaman from back in the day story... when you think about it, it doesn't make that much sense, it just feels like the Hong sisters needed something to move the plot along a bit at times, but they didn't want to kill it, which is one of those things that didn't make much sense. It was all kind of half-baked, half-assed, but so be it. For a while I thought it would have been rated higher, but then it totally dropped off towards the end. That last episode was worth getting smacked over, basically tossing away the little bit that had been building up for the whole 19 episodes! I'm really walking away from this with a bad taste in my mouth and hope to discover something better on Netflix. P.S.: The music was bad. P.S. 2: Big takeaway: makes me want to read the original legend.

A la caza de espíritus malignos (2020) (serie)

inglés I read what it's about and I was like, cool, some of the supernatural “we're going to fight the boogeyman" stuff, I'm in the mood for that. Only it ended up fighting corruption and dirty politics. It's like they couldn't forgive themselves. I mean, sure, given the way the story was laid out, it wasn't going to work here, but I was really hoping they were just going to fight demon slime... The series is horribly inconsistent. Sometimes it had pacing and cool action, but then it kind of bogged down into boredom and I didn't feel like I needed to keep watching to see how it would turn out. By the tenth episode, the feelings of not being excited were more prevalent, when suddenly there was tension, super action, it had momentum... and I thought it was finally picking up speed and I was excited to see what would happen next. Except that it fell down again, the tension faded, we got some unnecessary filer here and there, probably because of emotions or something, but it didn't go well, the songbird wasn't up to it, then it climaxed and showed what happened afterwards. Which was fine, I have to admit the ending of the show was hilarious. Disinterest alternated with interest, and I didn't come away from the series feeling like I got what I wanted to see, nor did I get adequate compensation instead. Sure, it's Korea, it looks nice, but that's about it.

A LIFE: kanašiki hito (2017) (serie)

inglés Kind of that hospital classic where we have a genius doctor who doesn't really get along with the Japanese way of running a hospital and the overall Japanese hospital philosophy. And here we get KimuTaku playing him, so there's something to watch, that guy is just interesting and has his own charm. However, his character seemed awfully flat to me, especially when compared to his childhood friend Danjo, played by Asano Tadanobu. His character went through so many changes and shifts that he was the most interesting thing about the entire series, even though in many cases he seemed almost repulsive from a human standpoint, in the end he actually wasn't. It might even make sense to write a longer treatise on him. I also appreciated Kimura Fumino, she was fine as the smart little sister, unlike Takeuchi Yuko, who I didn't find much to my liking this time around. It's not a bad series, it's average. If you're in the mood for a hospital setting with a genius in the lead, this is definitely not a bad choice.

A Silent Voice (2016)

inglés A beautifully animated probe into the lives of broken children. You make mistakes as a kid that can easily drag with you for years. It tortures you. And suddenly maybe there's a chance to deal with it – but do you have the right to? I really applaud that, because some people might wave a hand at bullying, it's just kid stuff, but this film shows in a very select and beautiful way that even that kind of "stupidity" can affect a lot of people for a long time. It subtly portrays how the fragile shell of a child can break at a moment's notice and how difficult it is to glue it back together, and that the broken cannot handle it on their own. In addition, it shows the contagiousness of brokenness. To put it more clearly – the psychology of the bullied, the bullies, and the bystanders is wonderfully portrayed. Not to mention that it was wrapped up in pleasing colors, subtle vibrancy, and fitting music. It fit my mood terribly well. I'm a little sad about the ending; it may have been too idyllic and far-fetched (almost faintly Murakami-esque) for me, but I'd still love to watch it again sometime. The next time I want something with human guilt. A strong 4 stars.

A Street Cat Named Bob (2016)

inglés I like movies with a positive message. You can be anything if you want it and you have someone to help you through it. It doesn't matter if it's a human or a random redheaded cat. A movie that certainly doesn't particularly speak to the situation of addicts or the homeless, on the other hand maybe someone will start to care because of it. Plus, it's a cat movie, and that's what's hot right now; after all, cats are supposedly good for helping people de-stress. Nothing special about the film, but it can't hurt to watch it.

Abarenbó mama (2007) (serie)

inglés At the very least, you learn a few things here about how it is in Japan with preschool education. In my opinion, the cast was chosen very well, it was interesting to watch them play together as I know them from other series/movies where they played quite different characters (well, except for Tomosaka Rie, I've seen her in a similar role before). But it was a bit too whiny for my taste, and some episodes had too many scenes that bored and I didn't want to watch them. On the other hand, there were moments that I truly enjoyed. The series has a way of cracking you up as well as moving you – and it's nothing violent. In fact, it's a family affair, where you gather around the table and eat dinner while watching the fortunes of Avarenbow Mama unfold. A better 3 stars.

Abenobaši mahó šótengai (2002) (serie)

inglés It took me quite a long time to make it through the first three episodes... maybe a month. Because I wasn't enjoying it, I was bored of it. But finally I had some time and I don't know, somehow I didn't want to leave it unfinished, so I sat down and watched it until the end. I started to like it a bit more than before, yet I was bored at times and hoping for the next episode. The best episode would be the one where we get to Hollywood, I enjoyed naming the movies that were mentioned here... :oD But it's definitely a shame that it didn't stay with the conviction: "That’s just how reality is, it can't be changed, it can't be hidden behind imagination and dreams, so accept it." Which is a great pity for the rating, because if it had stayed that way, I would have given it one star more. Btw: the most beautiful ending I've had the pleasure of encountering. Let's see if there's one that surpasses it :-)

Adiós Bafana (2007)

inglés The first half of the film is downright boring; after that it kind of starts to pick up, but you might miss it since you might still be bored by the first half. It's definitely a strong story, but it is exceedingly drawn out. I'd rather recommend, if I may, watching his entry into prison, then clicking through to the other years. From that half on, it's watchable without "skipping".

Afro-ken (2001)

inglés Even though we do a nice study of Afro-ken – find out what he's like, what his genealogy is – and even though he was definitely made by a guy who was on something (though it may not seem like it from the interviews in the piece, I'm firmly convinced of it, and I'm also firmly convinced that if I took just half a shot of the same shit the author did, I'd be high for life), I have to admit that the best part of the whole anime was the song. Catchy, catchy, just a hit. :-D Plus the English was understandable (but who knows, maybe an English native worked on it...). It's just that, despite the psychedelia, the softness, and the color, it's really a boring story about a strange Afro-ken and his ilk. And when I say boring, I mean really boring. It was boring even though I watched it after studying vocabulary and grammar. In other words, extremely boring. But the song is really good, just enough for that one star. It's at the beginning, so turn it on and then you can turn it off with no regrets.
