God, this was such a great movie, I actually can't remember the last time I felt such a cool energy vibe from a movie. An incredibly funny yet aware comedy with a hell of an A-list cast (seriously, literally everyone here is a familiar face), well-written characters whose interactions and chemistry I ate up from the opening minutes, and a terribly fine flow from the comedic beginning to the palpable and casually emotional conclusion. I have no reservations about this, as I haven't felt this relaxed and finished a film with such a satisfying feeling in a long time.

A very unpretentious, adventure family friendly comedy that finds its target audience in teenagers and younger children, but otherwise will definitely not find its place in the cinematic field elsewhere. The film is too flat, simple, straightforward and uninteresting to be a significant experience, but as a sort of backdrop it could probably survive. Still, it doesn't change the fact that two hours is a very excessive and tedious running time for this little thing.

Ari Aster and his Midsommar and Hereditary, as well as the entire A24 studio, have always blown me away and I left their films excited, and that feeling remained with me even weeks later. With Beau Is Afraid, however, I left embarrassed because it is definitely not what I expected. Subconsciously, I kind of understand what Aster is translating to the screen and I have to appreciate Joaquin Phoenix's performance and the overall idea, the bizarre storytelling style and the boldness and creativity, but 180 minutes is just a hell of a lot of time and to sit through this was too much even for me. The whole film feels like a set of random scenes where nothing makes sense and everything seems ridiculous, but you actually get the basic point. It's just that the ending and the feeling of the film just isn't as intense as I would have liked and expected.
