Seire

The rationally thinking Woo-jin thinks little of folk tales. According to the Korean tradition of "Seire", the new father should follow strict rules during the first 21 days after the birth of his child in order to protect the new-born from misfortune. Contrary to custom and the pleas of his wife, Hae-mis, he nevertheless attends the funeral of his ex-girlfriend, Se-young. A serious breach of taboo, with which Woo-jin unintentionally brings disaster upon himself and his family. In bold tracking shots, director Park Kang follows a young family man who has to deal with superstitions and feelings of guilt. A remarkably atmospheric feature film debut oscillating between psychodrama and classic horror. (Zurich Film Festival)
