A developer receives an important job: to quickly get an empty site ready for its sale to a wealthy businessman. The role of mediator between the shady construction boss and his hired laborers is played by Lidija, a woman with a cold heart who oversees the construction process and covers up the poor working conditions. But the men decide to protest and time is running out. This angry social drama in the style of the Dardenne brothers exposes the dark side of the economic transition and the bending of moral values in a place where capitalism trumps ordinary human life. An explosive, universal film that slaps the viewer in the face with its punk aesthetic, subtle sense of satire, and elements of Greek tragedy. (Karlovy Vary International Film Festival)

Este híbrido de género socialmente crítico se mueve entre varios temas y personajes la mayor parte del tiempo. Sobre todo, señala las lagunas del sistema por el que varios países poscomunistas se han convertido en un refugio para las empresas capitalistas occidentales, a través de una visión del entorno de los trabajadores de la construcción que trabajan ilegalmente y en condiciones peligrosas, y de sus insensibles empleadores que los explotan para engañar a los promotores extranjeros. Como nexo de unión entre ambos mundos, la película utiliza a la protagonista, una gerente moralmente ambigua que lleva mucho tiempo intentando sacar adelante a su familia y es la amante de su jefe, un traficante inmobiliario, que se ve empujada cada vez más allá de lo que está dispuesta a soportar en su trabajo. La película también gira en torno al personaje de un joven simple que planea marcharse con su novia tras terminar su trabajo de obrero. Esta película realista con fuertes elementos satíricos y un título irónico (y algunas notas falsas en las interpretaciones de varios personajes secundarios) comienza como un drama social, termina como un thriller y durante todo eso se convierte varias veces en una comedia negra en la que trabajadores vagos y borrachos hacen todo lo posible para no tener que trabajar. De este modo, la película plantea varios motivos que invitan a la reflexión, que en algunos casos dan escalofríos, pero que al mismo tiempo tardan casi hasta el acto final en asentarse, conectarse y, finalmente, llegar a ser realmente atractivos.

Working Class Heroes is a kind of tragicomic probe into the (everyday?) life of Serbian workers and heartless developers. On the one hand, the film entertains with its straightforward setting of a construction site; on the other hand, it gives you chills, considering how a worker-developer confrontation can play out, and what the consequences can be. Of the characters, I was most interested in Lidija and Mali, but also in the Professor. The final third managed to both piss me off and delight me beyond belief. Karma is free!
