El General Sternwood, un anciano ricachón americano que vive en Inglaterra, contrata a Philip Marlowe para que investigue el intento de chantaje a una de sus hijas. Marlowe pronto descubre que las acciones de chantaje parecen tener más conexión con la desaparición de Rusty, el marido de la otra hija del General Sternwood. Ella parece mostrar verdadera indiferencia ante el suceso, cosa que complica aún más el misterio., sólo el General Sternwood parece preocupado al ver como gángsteres, mafiosos y asesinos a sueldo se suceden en el transcurso de la investigación.
