We neither learn how to make explosives nor how to set up financial trusts, but we do meet Sweden's first international industrialist as he suffers his most shattering blow, when he realises he has been cheated by the duplicity of his partner and friend and believes himself to be utterly ruined. He manages to save his financial empire - but how will he fulfil his need for love? A beautiful, cultivated Viennese aristocrat, Countess Bertha Kinsky, seems to be the answer to his longing. However, she chooses to marry someone else. Alfred Nobel immediately replaces her in his affections with an insignificant young girl from Vienna, Sofie Hess.
