Sinopsis(1)

The film takes place in Budapest in the 1920s. The teen-age Rózsa Béla, the son of a washing-woman and a salesman born out of wedlock, gets employment as callboy in a luxurious hotel. Comparing the miserable world of the small rental apartments in the outskirts of the city with the luxurious lives of those living in the hotel, and under the influence of another callboy, the somewhat dogmatically-minded Elemér, he starts sympathising with socialist principles. He wants to personally take revenge for the unjustness suffered by his fellows, thus the suicide committed by the men-loving Franciska, while he finds himself continuously entangled in humiliating and disgusting situations. Her excellency the alcoholic Mrs. Keki does not only buy his young body but even his thoughts, and the detective threatens him with the loss of his job if he refuses to provide the police with information about Elemér and the others.
