Based on the award winning novel by Laurie Halse Anderson, "Speak" unfolds a story about Melinda (Kristen Stewart), a smart and spirited high school freshman who retreats into self-imposed silence after she is raped one night at a party. Feeling isolated from her classmates and from her preoccupied mother Joyce Sardnino (Elizabeth Perkins), Melinda retreats further in an attempt to escape the torments of high school. Wow. This is the kind of gentle wow that no one yells out, it maybe just wafts across a quiet room. Kristen was great, almost like she experienced it herself, like someone just caught on tape what was going on. It was like no one was acting, like everyone was just living their bleak lives. No chamber drama like this has ever captivated me, won me over, the way this one has. It's a beautiful film. Once again, wow. Though it may not look like it, this film brings hope, and that's art.

A brilliantly made "little" film that is elevated by the performances. Kristen Stewart gave believability to the whole film and I think that's the main thing in this kind of dramas.

Speak is actually a very simple and linear story with no major surprises or twists. The whole thing actually hinges on the actors, specifically one actor, and that is Kristen Stewart. A drama with nothing (except Kristen) exceptional from an American high school setting on a well worn topic. 65-70%
