This famous Finnish novel on which this film is based has been filmed four times. Stiller, the first director to be caught by the intensity of the story, assembled a very able cast to present his now-classic drama of unrequited love. In the sequence in which the character Olof scrutinizes his face in a mirror, the face he sees is his own. But it is really his inner self he is seeing, too.
