Sinopsis(1)

Set in a Northern Bohemian factory town in the 1960s, Vladimír Páral´s cult novel has been transferred to the screen as a grotesque reflection of human fate. An apartment building serves as the plot´s focal point: a workers´ room hosting occasional and long-term inhabitants, the factory director´s apartment, and men´s and women´s residence halls. Everyone here longs for love but their desires are appeased through rather vulgar sex. Then a young and gifted engineer named Borek Trojan enters this world and proceeds to live out a passionate love story, while at the same time reaching the peak of his professional carrier. But the feelings of contentment and happiness he expected as a victor are replaced by the nagging doubt that he is actually a loser. Is there an escape from this world? inglés Not a complete disaster, but a weak film definitely. The story does have potential to carry the entire film, but Polesný's offensive direction is highlighted by bizarre performances, namely Žilková, Norisová, and especially awful Tereza Duchková, who ruins all of the viewer's senses even in a small space. The efforts of reliable stalwarts Langmajer and Vetchý then come across as rather sad. ()

inglés I have to wonder why Páral's novels are such a challenge for Czech filmmakers. All that effort usually ends up creating some kind of botched result. This film didn't fare much better either. By caricaturing the characters, the seriousness of the theme seems to disappear. Moreover, it seems to me that Viktor Polesný does not go into the depth of the problem at all and just helplessly skims the surface, as evidenced by the final nonsensical glimpse into the year 1989 with the terribly disguised Jakub Prachař. So as not to be overly critical, at least in terms of acting, the audience will find something to like here. Especially Zlata Adamovská, Petra Špalková, Marek Taclík, Ondřej Vetchý, and Jiří Langmajer handled their roles excellently. (45%) ()
