Jako kníže Rohan

Yes, it's blatantly black and white, predictable and all manner of things... But I have never seen a better and more evocative rendition of the notorious phrase that pride precedes a fall. One of Vladimír Menšík's best roles, I would say. However, the great Jana Gýrová as his wife, the overly kind Ludmila Roubíková as Špáta's mother, and Josef Bláha, who doesn't say much in his small role, but what he does say and the way he says it is pretty strong stuff. I read Rais's book once, I think. But like this production, it certainly didn't stick in my head. Five clear stars. (29.09.2011)
