At the beginning of the fifties, Ostoros Marci from a poor peasant family gets accepted to the Faculty of Humanities in Budapest. The fierce political battles there are led by his old acquaintance, Ács Laci, the secretary of the Young Workers' Communist Organisation, against - among others - Marci's lover, Bori. Since Marci is unable to firmly take her side, they break. When Laci is arrested, Marci tries to help his friend's suspicious wife. He is asked to be the secretary of the Democratic Youth Organisation, but refuses the proposal. Mummy's visit to Budapest, and later his own visit back home in his village make him realise how far he has departed from his family and traditions. Back home, besides the usual disputes between generations, his relatives are divided by the issue of entering the co-operative. Marci returns to the capital with his elder brother, Vendel.
