En los Estados Unidos de los años 40, dos amigas del colegio se separan. Merry Noel deja a Liz Hamilton para casarse. Veinte años después, Merry se ha convertido en una madre y ama de casa a la antigua usanza y Liz se ha revelado como una escritora de cierto prestigio intelectual. Una gira por California permite a Liz visitar la casa de Merry. Allí Merry parece vivir ajena a los problemas, rodeada de un ambiente frívolo y superficial. Pero, Liz descubre en Merry una faceta inédita. Una noche, Merry le lee una novela típicamente consumista escrita por ella misma. Liz reacciona con desprecio.
